Ciao, travelers! I’m Rileigh, the owner of Travel Mellow and a former resident of Italy. Today, I’ll be sharing a personalized one-day itinerary for exploring the charming city of Genoa during the winter season. Drawing from my experiences living in Italy, I’ll provide you with an authentic taste of local life and insider tips to make the most of your visit.

Day 1: Discovering the Historic Heart of Genoa

Start your day in the Piazza de Ferrari, the main square of Genoa, and admire the beautiful Renaissance and Baroque architecture that surrounds you. From there, wander through the narrow streets of the historic city center, known as the Caruggi. Stop by the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo to marvel at its striking black-and-white striped facade and Gothic interior.

For lunch, I recommend Trattoria Da Maria, a cozy trattoria serving up delicious Genovese specialties like pesto alla genovese (basil pesto) and focaccia (a local flatbread). Be sure to try the famous Genovese pesto – it’s a must-try when in Genoa!

In the afternoon, explore the Strade Nuove, a series of Renaissance palaces and museums. Visit the Palazzo Ducale and the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola to admire their impressive art collections and historic interiors. If you have time, stroll through the Porto Antico area, where you’ll find waterfront views, museums, and a lively atmosphere.

As evening falls, head to Osteria Da O Vitin for a taste of Genoa’s renowned seafood dishes, such as fritto misto (fried seafood platter) or spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). End your day with a hot drink and a sweet treat at Caffè Degli Specchi, a cozy café known for its delicious pastries.

General Travel Tips for Genoa, Italy

  • Many attractions have reduced hours or are closed on Mondays during the off-season, so plan accordingly.
  • Public transportation (buses and metro) is the best way to get around the city, as parking can be challenging.
  • Dress in layers and bring rain gear, as the winter weather in Genoa can be unpredictable.
  • If you have extra time, consider visiting the Christmas markets and admiring the festive decorations and nativity scenes around the city.

While Genoa may not be as popular as other Italian destinations during the winter months, it offers a unique opportunity to experience the city’s rich history and local traditions without the crowds.
