Ciao, travelers! I’m Rileigh, the owner of Travel Mellow, and I’m thrilled to share with you my personalized 12-day itinerary for exploring the beautiful region of Puglia in southern Italy. Having lived in Italy for two years, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the country’s rich culture, history, and cuisine. This itinerary is designed to help you experience the authentic side of Puglia, away from the typical tourist traps. Get ready to immerse yourself in the region’s charming towns, stunning landscapes, and delectable local flavors!

Day 1: Exploring Bari’s Old Town

Start your journey in the vibrant city of Bari, the capital of Puglia. Spend the day wandering through the charming Bari Vecchia (Old Town), where you’ll find narrow alleys, historic buildings, and a lively atmosphere. Don’t miss the Basilica di San Nicola, a stunning Romanesque church that houses the relics of St. Nicholas. In the evening, stroll along the Lungomare seafront promenade and enjoy the sunset over the Adriatic Sea. For dinner, I recommend trying the local cuisine at one of the traditional restaurants in Bari Vecchia.

Day 2: Alberobello and Wine Tasting

Today, embark on a day trip to the charming town of Alberobello, famous for its unique trulli houses – cone-shaped stone dwellings with whitewashed walls and grey conical roofs. Wander through the picturesque streets and admire these iconic structures. In the afternoon, visit a local winery for a wine tasting and learn about the region’s renowned wine production. I suggest Ristorante Primo Bacio in Alberobello for a delicious dinner featuring traditional Pugliese dishes.

Day 3: Castellana Caves and Polignano a Mare

Start your day by exploring the stunning Castellana Caves, a vast underground cave system with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. After your underground adventure, head to the coastal town of Polignano a Mare. Stroll through the historic center, admire the beautiful Lama Monachile beach, and enjoy a memorable dining experience at the famous Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, built into a cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Day 4: Beach Day in Monopoli or Ostuni

Take a break from sightseeing and spend a relaxing day at one of Puglia’s beautiful beaches. I recommend either the charming town of Monopoli or the picturesque Ostuni, known as the “White City” for its whitewashed buildings. Soak up the sun, swim in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoy a leisurely lunch at a seaside restaurant. For a farm-to-table dining experience, try Masseria Il Frantoio in Ostuni.

Day 5: Altamura and Its Archaeological Museum

Today, explore the historic town of Altamura, known for its delicious bread and impressive archaeological museum. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Altamura to see fascinating exhibits showcasing the region’s rich history. Afterward, wander through the charming historic center and enjoy the local atmosphere. Don’t forget to try the famous Pane di Altamura (Altamura bread) at a local bakery.

Day 6: Matera and the Sassi di Matera

Embark on a day trip to the stunning city of Matera, famous for its ancient Sassi di Matera – a complex of cave dwellings carved into the rocky landscape. Explore these unique cave houses, churches, and streets, and learn about the fascinating history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. For an authentic dining experience, I recommend Ristorante Vini e Cucina, which serves delicious local specialties.

Day 7: Gargano National Park and Vieste

Spend the day exploring the beautiful Gargano National Park, a protected area known for its stunning landscapes, forests, and coastline.
