Ciao, travelers! I’m Rileigh, the owner of Travel Mellow, and I’m thrilled to share with you my personalized 13-day itinerary for exploring the vibrant cities of Naples and Rome, as well as the stunning Amalfi Coast. Having lived in Italy for two years, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the country’s rich culture, history, and cuisine. This itinerary is designed to provide you with an authentic Italian experience, steering clear of tourist traps and focusing on the hidden gems that locals love.

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Naples

Kick off your Italian adventure by immersing yourself in the bustling streets of Naples. Start your day at the iconic Spaccanapoli, a narrow street that cuts through the historic center of the city. Wander through the lively markets, admire the beautiful churches, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. Next, visit the Piazza del Gesù and marvel at the stunning Baroque architecture of the Gesù Nuovo Church. End your day with a visit to the Cappella Sansevero, a hidden gem that houses the famous Veiled Christ sculpture. For dinner, I recommend Da Michele, a legendary pizzeria that serves up some of the best Neapolitan-style pizza in the city.

Day 2: Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius

Today, you’ll step back in time and explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Wander through the remarkably preserved streets, homes, and public buildings, and get a glimpse into the daily life of this Roman city. After your visit to Pompeii, take a hike up Mount Vesuvius for breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples. For lunch, stop by a local trattoria and indulge in some delicious Neapolitan cuisine.

Day 3: The Amalfi Coast

Prepare for a day of stunning coastal scenery as you embark on a day trip to the iconic Amalfi Coast. Start your journey in the picturesque town of Positano, where you can wander through the narrow streets, admire the colorful houses clinging to the cliffs, and enjoy a leisurely lunch at Buca di Bacco, a charming restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea. Next, head to Amalfi and explore the historic center, including the stunning Amalfi Cathedral. End your day in the hilltop town of Ravello, known for its breathtaking views and beautiful gardens.

Day 4: Naples’ Cultural Treasures

Today, delve deeper into Naples’ rich cultural heritage by visiting the Naples National Archaeological Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Afterward, take a stroll through the historic center and visit the Castel dell’Ovo, a medieval castle situated on a small island in the Bay of Naples. For dinner, I suggest Sorbillo, another excellent pizzeria that serves up delicious Neapolitan-style pizza.

Day 5: Capri

Embark on a day trip to the enchanting island of Capri. Take a boat tour around the island to admire the stunning coastline and the famous Faraglioni rock formations. Once on the island, explore the charming town of Capri, visit the Villa Jovis (the ruins of an ancient Roman palace), and indulge in some delicious seafood at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Herculaneum and Solfatara Volcano

Today, you’ll visit the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, which, like Pompeii, was buried under volcanic ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Explore the remarkably preserved ruins and get a glimpse into the daily life of this wealthy Roman town. Afterward, head to the Solfatara Volcano, a dormant volcanic crater where you can witness the natural phenomenon of fumaroles (steam vents) and bubbling mud pools.

Day 7: Free Day in Naples

Take a break from the sightseeing and spend a leisurely day exploring Naples at your own pace. Wander through the vibrant neighborhoods, visit local markets, or simply relax in one of the city’s charming piazzas. For dinner, I recommend Nennillo, a fantastic seafood restaurant that serves up fresh, locally-caught dishes.

Day 8: Travel to Rome

Today, you’ll bid farewell to Naples and make your way to the Eternal City of Rome. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and spend the rest of the day exploring the city at your leisure.

Day 9: Vatican City

Dedicate a full day to exploring the wonders of Vatican City. Start your day early to beat the crowds and visit the Vatican Museums, home to an incredible collection of art and artifacts, including the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel. After your museum visit, head to St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest and most magnificent churches in the world. For dinner, I suggest Armando al Pantheon, a cozy trattoria located near the Pantheon, serving up delicious Roman cuisine.

Day 10: Ancient Rome

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of ancient Rome by visiting the iconic Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built. Afterward, explore the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, where you can see the ruins of ancient temples, basilicas, and the former residences of Roman emperors. For lunch, stop by Dar Poeta, a cozy restaurant known for its delicious pasta dishes and friendly service.

Day 11: Rome’s Iconic Landmarks

Today, you’ll explore some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Start your day at the Trevi Fountain, where you can toss a coin and make a wish to return to the Eternal City. Next, visit the Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple that has been remarkably well-preserved. End your day at the Piazza Navona, a lively square known for its beautiful fountains, street artists, and charming cafés. For dinner, I recommend Roscioli, a beloved Roman institution that serves up delicious cured meats, cheeses, and wines.

Day 12: Tivoli

Take a day trip to the picturesque town of Tivoli, located just outside of Rome. Visit the stunning Villa d’Este, a Renaissance villa famous for its beautiful gardens and fountains. Afterward, explore the Villa Adriana, the former residence of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, which features an impressive complex of buildings and gardens.

Day 13: Departure

Sadly, your Italian adventure has come to an end. Spend your final morning in Rome soaking up the city’s vibrant atmosphere one last time before heading to the airport for your departure.
