Cruising the Italian Coast: A Guide to Mediterranean Cruises

As an Italian travel advisor who loves helping clients craft their dream vacations, I’m often asked for tips on selecting the perfect Mediterranean cruise. This sparkling sea flanked by world-class ports calls to mind la dolce vita—savoring fresh seafood on sun-drenched decks, exploring cobblestoned villages and ancient ruins during port days, and toasting spectacular sunsets.

The options for Mediterranean cruises can seem endless, from mega-ships to intimate yachts, budget to luxury. Based on my years of experience planning cruises that exceed travelers’ expectations, here is my guide to choosing the Mediterranean cruise that’s right for you.

Choosing the Right Cruise Line

Selecting your cruise line is the first step. Consider your budget, style of ship and itineraries offered. Mass market lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian cater to a wide demographic seeking a resort-style experience. For a more sophisticated ambiance, opt for lines like Oceania, Silversea, Crystal and Azamara.

Luxury lines truly spoil their guests. Think spacious staterooms, gourmet dining, exceptional service, enrichment activities and included excursions. If you dream of a large ship with endless amenities, Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas offers thrills like waterslides and surf simulators. For a boutique feel, lines like Windstar and Seabourn carry fewer than 300 passengers.

Do you see yourself lingering on deck with a glass of Brunello as the coastline slips by? Smaller, more nimble ships can access charming ports in the Amalfi Coast and French Riviera that mega-ships cannot. Identify the destinations that most appeal to you, then select a cruise line and specific sailing that visits them.

When to Cruise the Med

The Mediterranean cruise season runs primarily from April through October when the weather is ideal for exploring port cities. Peak season is June through August when the crowds arrive—along with sweltering temperatures. While popular with families traveling with kids, this time requires booking well in advance and paying top dollar.

I often steer travelers to shoulder seasons for the best blend of good weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. April, May, September and October still offer comfortable temperatures without the sticker shock of the summer months.

If you don’t mind brisker weather, Mediterranean cruises are available year-round. Holiday cruises in December illuminate ports like Barcelona and Venice with festive lights and decor. Avoid the coldest months of January and February though—attractions keep limited hours and some ports may be skipped due to inclement weather.

Choosing Departure Ports

Most Mediterranean cruises depart from ports bordering the sea like Barcelona, Athens, Rome and Venice. Common Italy ports include Rome/Civitavecchia, Naples, Sicily and Venice. Consider convenience of getting to your port city when choosing.

I generally recommend first-time Mediterranean cruisers start or end in Rome to allow time to explore the city’s treasures pre-or-post-cruise. For Greeks Island focused itineraries, Athens makes a good launch point. Spain focused? Sail round-trip from Barcelona.

Some Mediterranean cruises depart from “home” ports farther away, like London, Amsterdam or Miami. While requiring more initial travel, these itineraries allow you to see more of Europe pre/post cruise. I advise arriving a few days early when possible to avoid missing the ship due to delayed flights or luggage.

Popular Mediterranean Itinerary Options

Mediterranean cruises offer diverse itineraries ranging from country intensive coastal journeys to tours of the entire region. Select your itinerary based on which destinations and experiences matter most.

For France, choose a Riviera-focused sailing calling on ports from Marseille to Nice. Sample the markets of Antibes, relax on the beaches of Villefranche, and revel in Monaco’s glamour. Italy devotees will delight in routes linking the coast’s shining stars from Rome and Florence’s art to Pisa, Venice and the Amalfi Coast.

Greek Island hopping remains a perennial favorite, with stops on Santorini, Mykonos, Crete and more. Spain and Portugal combos allow you to experience Barcelona’s architecture, Palma de Mallorca’s beauty and Lisbon’s old-world charm. Grand Mediterranean journeys offer a tantalizing taste of the entire region.

Shore Excursions: Plan Ahead

Shore excursions help you make the most of precious port time by joining organized tours of top attractions. Reserve popular options like Vatican tours or wine-tastings months before departure, as they sell out fast. Consider your mobility and interests when selecting shore excursions. Focus on 2-3 marquee experiences per cruise rather than over-packing your days. Traveling with companions? Look for small group or private tours.

For the intrepid, I suggest self-guided explorations during port calls. Arm yourself with maps, guidebooks and must-see lists. Wander the winding alleyways, chat with locals, stumble upon hole-in-the-wall trattorias—that’s where the magic lies! Just ensure you make it back to the ship on time.

Bon Voyage!

With so many alluring options, selecting your perfect Mediterranean cruise may seem daunting at first. But by considering your priorities and cruise style, the choices become clearer. I find guests have an incredible voyage when the destinations, ship, timing and itinerary align with their wishes. Let me know your Mediterranean cruise dreams, and I’ll help identify the best choices for smooth sailing your way!
